Named in Honor of
PFC John Rivers, USMC
November 23, 1918 - August 21, 1942
John Rivers was killed at the Battle of Tenaru, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands in World War II as a machine gunner in the First Marine Division. Bullets swarming all around him, Rivers answered the Japanese fire successfully sweeping his machine gun back and forth across the approaching enemy. His personal valor and courageous devotion to duty contributed to the defeat of the enemy and was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism, posthumously.
Born in Riverside, New Jersey, Johnny Rivers played football at Quakertown High, Pa. He was also a respected fighter representing Bethlehem he fought for the Diamond Belt in Philadelphia.
